Scouts, Cubs and Beavers

17th Purley, St. John's Old Coulsdon Scout Group, which is sponsored by St. John's Church, comprises a Beaver Colony, a Cub Pack and a Scout Troop. It aims to encourage the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people so that they may take a constructive place in society. The method of achieving this is by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training based on The Scout Promise and Law guided by adult leadership.

The Beaver Scouts (age 6-8) take part in activities ranging from craft work to play acting which serve to prepare them for Cub Scouts, where their Scouting becomes more structured involving blocks of test work allied to which are a large number of activity badges which the boys may attempt.

The Cub Scout programme (age 8-10) is geared to the boys' progression to Scouts (age 10-14) where the Patrol Leaders' Council, under the guidance of its Leader, decides the content of the Scouting within the Troop and again the activities become more complex, the attaining of each badge and award requiring more time and effort.

The Cub Packs and Scout Troops take part in annual camps as part of the programme and all sections participate in a regular Church Parade at the Worship Together service.

Beavers meet on Wednesday, the Cub Pack on Tuesday and the Scout Troop on Wednesday after the Beavers.
