Grange Park  Sunday 19th August  at 12.00 noon  ‘Fields in Trust’, who are the owners of Grange Park, has joined The Royal British Legion in commemorating the 'Allies' Hundred Days Offensive' of 1918 (from 8th August to 11th November) which  was the final period of the First World War, during which the Allies launched a series of offensives against the Central Powers on the Western Front.  On each of the 100 days one of their parks will be commemorating the campaign and Grange Park's day is TODAY, Sunday 19th August.

It is hoped that at least 100 local people will each walk 1km in Grange Park.  Everybody is welcome to walk, if not the whole 1km then part of it, whatever age.  Please do join in  and by doing so say 'Thank you' to the World War One generation that fought and died in that campaign and rebuilt our world.  There will also be an exhibition in the gazebo illustrating the lives of the 16 local men who took part in the 'Hundred Days Offensive'.  Please help The Friends of Grange Park and the World War One Group who are keen to make this event a memorable community occasion.

TIM WOULD LIKE YOUR HELP…  to provide an Ophthalmic Microscope to be used in an eye clinic in Talas, a rural area of Kyrgyzstan where the average wage is less than £8 a week.  Tim brought the Microscope to church last Sunday, packed in two very large cases – which he didn’t unpack for fear of not being able to put it all back correctly!  He told us that correcting eye problems could enable people to work and support their families in a country where there is no ‘benefits system’ for those who can’t work.  The cost is £8,000 – of which about £4,000 has already been raised.  If you would like to help, gifts can be sent to: Horley Baptist Church 40-52-40 A/c 00017622 marking the payment ‘Kyrgyzstan Eye Project’.  Contact Tim Hill (07986 297189 or pastortimhill@outlook.com) for further information and see the poster or pick up a leaflet in church.

JEANETTE NEWMAN   It was with great sadness that we heard that Jeanette had died recently.  She had lived and fought with cancer for several years and had always done so with bravery and good grace.  Her lovely sunny presence will be greatly missed in the community. A Thanksgiving Service for Jeanette will be held on Wednesday 29th August at 12.00 noon in St. John's - and everyone is welcome to join Malcolm and the family afterwards at the Surrey National Golf Club, Chaldon from 1.15 p.m.  The Committal will be at the Surrey and Sussex Crematorium at 10.30 a.m. and everybody will also be welcome there.  Please keep Malcolm and Jeanette’s family in your prayers.

COULD YOU HELP?   After several years of looking after the church system, Jon Waters will be stepping down from the role at the end of September.  We are very grateful for what he has done in developing the system and overseeing the recorded music every Sunday.  We will therefore need to appoint someone else who can take on this role.  The ideal person will have some technical knowledge, or the willingness to learn, and can build up a small team to work with him/her.  This is a matter of some urgency, so please give it your careful thought.     PAUL   (rev.paul.c.roberts@gmail.com)

Surrey Churches Preservation Trust ‘Ride and Stride’ - Sat 8 Sept.  Image result for Ride and Stride 2018I will be taking part, trying to visit as many churches as possible in the one day, and I am looking for sponsorship.  Half the money raised will go to St John's and the other half will go to the SCPT for distribution to churches in need of restoration.  The sponsorship form is on the Information Desk at the back of church. This will be the 20th year I have taken part in this event.     Angela Gillman
